Design Thinking: From Insights to Viability

We have Ray and Charles Eames to thank for helping us set the scene for this ability. It involves abstraction to define meaning, goals, and principles, as well as precision to define details and features. This ability involves understanding stakeholders and purpose in order to define the product or service’s features.

We’ll show you how design thinking can (and will) unlock your creativity so that you can repeatedly come up with innovative ideas and solutions to problems (big and small) that you face in your life and your work. Through online content, hands-on assignments, ongoing coaching, and proven frameworks, you'll learn how to practice and champion design thinking in any role you're in. Knowledge acquired in the latter stages of the process can inform repeats of earlier stages. Information is continually used to inform the understanding of the problem and solution spaces, and to redefine the problem itself. Designers or evaluators rigorously test the complete product using the best solutions identified in the Prototype stage.

Footer: Executive Education

This human-centered design process consists of five core stages Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype and Test. There are hundreds of ideation techniques you can use—such as Brainstorm, Brainwrite, Worst Possible Idea and SCAMPER. Brainstorm and Worst Possible Idea techniques are typically used at the start of the ideation stage to stimulate free thinking and expand the problem space. This allows you to generate as many ideas as possible at the start of ideation.

Design thinking reverses this process and advocates that teams begin with desirability and bring in the other two lenses later. Design teams use design thinking to tackle ill-defined/unknown problems (aka wicked problems). Alan Dix, Professor of Human-Computer Interaction, explains what wicked problems are in this video. Learn design thinking tools and get coaching to drive innovation at your own company.

Share Knowledge, Get Respect!

The HPI – Stanford Design Thinking Research Program provides an opportunity for multidisciplinary research teams at Stanford University to scientifically investigate the phenomena of innovation in a holistic way. Researchers are encouraged to develop ambitious, long-term explorations related to the innovation method of Design Thinking across technical, business, and human aspects. The Program seeks to engage multidisciplinary research teams with divergent backgrounds in science, engineering, design, and the humanities.

In the slide deck, you’ll find text you can copy and paste into an email to invite your participants. Discover your creativity and build a lifelong practice of innovative problem solving by mastering the art of design thinking. Ready to transform your company and build a culture of innovative problem-solving? Move beyond theory and dive into hands-on practice in the art of innovation.

What’s more, results from the Test stage may reveal new insights about users which lead to another brainstorming session (Ideate) or the development of new prototypes (Prototype). These days are taught in the classroom in a combination of lessons and hands-on small group work. On the last day of the program, you will make progress on your real business challenge using the tools you’ve learned. In the week after the program, you will be supported by our coaches to apply design techniques to a real business challenge. During the third stage of the design thinking process, designers are ready to generate ideas. You’ve grown to understand your users and their needs in the Empathize stage, and you’ve analyzed your observations in the Define stage to create a user centric problem statement.

It is important to note the five stages of design thinking are not always sequential. They do not have to follow a specific order, and they can often occur in parallel or be repeated iteratively. The stages should be understood as different modes which contribute to the entire design project, rather than sequential steps. IDEO is a leading design consultancy and has developed its own version of the design thinking framework and adds the dimension of implementation in the process. The design sprint is a very structured version of design thinking that fits into the timeline of a sprint (a sprint is a short timeframe in which agile teams work to produce deliverables). Developed by Google Ventures, the design sprint seeks to fast-track innovation.

From architecture and engineering to technology and services, companies across industries have embraced the methodology to drive innovation and address complex problems. Don Norman, a pioneer of user experience design, explains why the designer’s way of thinking is so powerful when it comes to such complex problems. Wicked problems demand teams to think outside the box, take action immediately, and constantly iterate—all hallmarks of design thinking.

We work with partners from non-profit, corporate, and government organizations to develop projects that address real-world challenges. The workshop is co-facilitated by you alongside d.school instructors Laura McBain & Louie Montoya via video. The d.school is a cutting edge space where you will experience classroom content and also work actively in a hands-on design studio. Kelley’s devotion to design engineering led him to coin the term “design thinking”, which leverages human-centered design methodologies to produce meaningful and value-driven innovations. His contributions include thousands of breakthrough creations, including the first computer mouse for Apple.

The design thinking process should not be seen as a concrete and inflexible approach to design; the component stages identified should serve as a guide to the activities you carry out. The stages might be switched, conducted concurrently or repeated several times to gain the most informative insights about your users, expand the solution space and hone in on innovative solutions. Let’s make creativity and innovation part of your standard operating procedures. With our design thinking courses, you can bring new ideas and fresh perspectives to your team, your department, or your entire company.

Like in life, there is no single right answer in a d.school class. We give students ample opportunities to experiment, take creative risks, and fail. It's great preparation for real-world problem solving—because it is real-world problem solving. It becomes incredibly difficult to manage at that number even if you are a Zoom facilitator pro. Since the activities need partners to work, people can’t come late or leave early, as it will negatively impact the learning experience.

By helping you stay focused on the people you’re serving, by encouraging you to seek out and consider diverse perspectives, and by allowing you to hush your inner critic. At the cornerstone of Design Thinking Bootcamp is working on a real business challenge that gives you the opportunity to actively learn tools and behaviors that you will apply to your work before leaving the d.school. By the end of the Prototype stage, the design team will have a better idea of the product’s limitations and the problems it faces. They’ll also have a clearer view of how real users would behave, think and feel when they interact with the end product. “To grow and innovate, you need input.” Particularly information related to the emotional needs of people, who may not be best able to tell you exactly what it is they require. Take time to observe human behavior, ask questions, and empathize with the user.

When you or your students just need to quickly generate a chart to use in a slide or share in a blog post. LiveGap Charts Builder will let you and your students quickly generate charts from simple data sets. The report uses data gathered from over 100,000 customers of HubSpot CRM. Bar charts that show percent change, like the one below, are simpler to make but still drive those key ideas home. A general rule of thumb is to find the aspect ratio at which the average slope of the data line is about 45°. William Cleveland, a great of the data visualization world, has suggested that slopes are most readable at this angle.

The legend for this bubble cloud, for example, works well because it features only two categories, which don’t take much effort to remember. And if the legend wasn’t there, the chart would have to have 13 extra labels (to indicate whether each bubble falls in the “male” or “female” category). Legends can be useful when you have multiple data points that belong to a few categories, when adding a legend can help you eliminate many labels. A more effective way of representing that same information is to label data points and data series directly on the chart. To understand a chart with a legend, readers are forced to scan back and forth between the legend and the chart itself. Every time they make that switch, they’re using some of their limited memory resources to keep the details of the legend in mind.

In Figure 6.4, the left side shows a line chart that starts the vertical axis at zero, but as a result the line appears very flat at the top of the chart and hides changes in values. The right side shows a line chart where the vertical axis was reduced to match the range of values, which results in a clearer depiction of change. Both sides are technically correct, and in this case, the right side is a better fit for the data story. Labels and annotations are often used across the chart to give more context. In that case, a relevant axis can be hidden and the chart will look less cluttered. These 10 do’s and don’ts will get you well on your way to designing effective charts for your next infographic, report, or presentation.

Effectively Narrate Your Data Story

But you may be surprised to learn that some rules are less rigid than others, and can be “broken” when necessary to emphasize a point, as long as you honestly interpret the data. Include a scatter plot in your dashboard to translate a data set into a visual story that will grasp your audience’s attention. Add icons and images to chart templates to create professional graphics, and download your work when it’s ready.

By placing labels as close as possible to their respective data points, you can reduce the work required of your reader to interpret your chart. You can also choose the horizontal and vertical alignment of you text within each cell. Just select the settings tab and you’ll see the alignment options below. The same single rises on one chart, though it doesn’t need to debut or return, as it was still going strong last week. “Black Hole Sun” climbs significantly on the Hard Rock Streaming Songs ranking, which tracks only the most-streamed tunes in the country that fit under the hard rock label. The core of our application involves getting OHLCV data over a given time interval (read more about the endpoint on CoinGecko API's documentation).

Is Piktochart’s graph maker free to use?

This is especially important in line charts, when you need to differentiate each variable clearly from the others. Since there’s only one variable that we’re tracking, including a legend to let viewers know what the line stands for would be redundant, and would only clutter up your design. However, in modern design, it’s a good rule of thumb to always go with flat design over 3D, no matter what you’re creating. As I said, there are still some cases when 3D chart design makes sense, which is why we give all Visme users the freedom to determine for themselves which version they need.

Save & Share

Open the table widget, and you’ll see the options under the data tab. Double-click it and under the DATA tab, spot the green IMPORT button. Click it, select your CSV file, and your data gets visualized automatically. Before you start choosing and customizing your charts, you need to know how to upload your data! That’s why I’ve compiled this comprehensive list of chart design do’s and don’ts.

Gauge Charts

While you can always tell your audience what your data means, what better way to persuade them than by creating a visual aid? Looking at a visual can actually resonate better with your audience than reading numbers. If there’s a large difference in categories, being able to see it in a chart can have an even bigger effect.

Sales included in the data represents B2C sales of physical goods including VAT. Soundgarden is enjoying their biggest week on the Billboard charts in quite some time. The hard rock outfit is back on a handful of tallies with one of their biggest singles, which surged in popularity recently. As they return to several lists, the group also lands their first hit on a pair of rankings–years after they split up. By examining historical price and volume patterns, liquidity providers can identify trends, determine optimal entry and exit points, and adjust their liquidity provision accordingly.

Charts

chart design

Showcasing this data within a chart provides a much better way for your audience to understand your argument. However, you don’t want to go overboard and start using charts when it doesn’t fully make sense, or when another visual — like icons, illustrations or stock photos — could better convey your point. Upload, then drag and drop your logo or a screenshot of your website to auto-magically extract your brand colors.

Features of the Chart Maker

You can insert any ideas into the above template, like milk versus juice, advertising versus marketing and more. But hierarchy charts can be used for even more than that, like in this template example below that covers the SEO hierarchy of need from most important to least important. Pictograms tend to use icons or graphics in place of numbers to help give an at-a-glance idea of how many people, things, etc., are in a data set.

You can include an outline only of your points, or use a translucent color to make the comparisons more obvious. You don’t want to use opaque colors that cover up other variables in your chart. A radar chart can also be a great way to visualize performance, like in a gymnast’s routine or an employee’s performance during their annual review. Pie charts are also great for presenting demographic information as well. A pie chart is used to show pieces of a whole, most commonly when portraying percentages, as those are always going to be pieces of 100%.

Your next step is to add your data or content right into your design! As I’ve mentioned throughout this article, we have a ton of different customizable templates available in Visme for you to create and edit your charts. Another example of a comparison chart use is for weighing the pro’s and con’s of something, like solo versus couple traveling. This comparison chart template below is available for customization in Visme.

This technique allows you to compare many more variables than you could in a single chart. The visual focus of the chart (the thing that stands out most when you first look at the chart) should directly reinforce that goal. It should be created with a specific goal in mind–to express or support some argument. So whenever you can, replace isolated legends with direct chart labels. By default, our scatterplots allow users to hover over data points to reveal precise values, making direct labeling unnecessary. High-density charts that display many points in a small area should not be labeled directly.

When it comes to designing a bar chart, you can have your data all over the place, with the tallest bars sticking up every which way. Now if there is a hard part when it comes to creating a chart, this is the hard part. But only because there are certain rules to adhere to when creating a visually appealing design. We have several different types of hierarchy charts available in Visme, from visualizing a team’s hierarchy to showcasing a sales funnel. These types of charts are perfect for showing side-by-side comparisons of two or more items, and can be very visually appealing along the way. In fact, you can create custom flowcharts right inside Visme with whatever types of lines, bubbles and fonts you choose.

You can download it in one of five different formats including JPG, PNG, PDF, PPT and HTML5. The last two give you the ability to share charts offline in presentations and other content types. If you’re creating a comparison chart comparing different products or features, include icons that help to visually represent what those products and features are, like in the template example below. This is most common in 3D pie charts, when the angle and dimension of the chart can make some pieces of the pie seem like they are larger than they actually are. If creating a chart to determine frequency or correlation, like in the case of a histogram or scatter plot, your results are dependent on where they land on each axis.

Once you’ve logged into the free chart maker, you can easily add any type of chart to any design. Just click on the Data tab and choose from our 16 chart types and many more data widgets to find the perfect representation of your information. Choose your animation, your colors, your fonts, your X and Y axis labels and more. If you’re like most people, you probably choose your charts based on how easy it is to create said chart in a basic charting tool.

Visme also offers a number of charts and data widgets outside of the Graph Engine as well, as you can see below. Knowing when to create a chart is just as important as knowing how, so let’s dive into that point of discussion first. This is because reading numbers and trying to visualize their meaning in your head is a much different experience than watching a chart visualize their meaning right before your eyes. Quickly diagram how your concepts and ideas overlap with Miro’s Venn diagram maker. Show information in the simplest way and run better brainstorms, meetings, and presentations.

Do You Need a Passport for a Bahamas Cruise?

passport for cruise to bahamas

Even if you're careful to return to the ship on time, you never know when a mechanical issue will force passengers to disembark in a foreign port. If you happen to get stranded abroad, you will need a valid passport. You will always need a passport book if you are starting and ending your cruise in different ports. Even if your cruise starts and ends in U.S. cities, you will still be required to have a valid U.S. passport book in order to board. There are some advantages to traveling with a passport card rather than a passport book, mainly cost and portability.

Accepted Identification for Other Nationalities

It is important for parents and guardians to understand that The Bahamas complies with the United States’s policies regarding child safety and abduction protocols. As a result, there is little flexibility when it comes to proper documentation and accountability for visiting children and their parents. A good example of this is a repositioning cruise from Miami to San Diego.

Travel document requirements for sailings from Southampton, England

If you’re on a cruise, this means making sure your passport is still valid for another six months following the last day of the cruise. Children under 16 can also travel to the Bahamas on a cruise with an original birth certificate, naturalization certificate, or certificate of citizenship. Children under 19 can use these same documents only if they are traveling with a school, church group, sports team, or other organization with adult supervision.

Learn about your destination

If you’re planning to fly to The Bahamas, you’ll need a valid U.S. passport book. This is a requirement for all air travel, domestic or international to both enter and exit The Bahamas. The passport book serves as proof of your identity and U.S. citizenship, which is essential for international travel. Citizens must have a valid passport and a visa, if applicable, to enter the Bahamas. It is important to check the entry requirements for the specific country of citizenship before planning a Bahamas cruise.

Do you need a passport for a Bahamas cruise?

Always check with your Vacations To Go cruise counselor at the time of booking to verify the documentation requirements for your vacation. To help eliminate any chance of losing your passport while on the ship, we recommend keeping it in your stateroom or suite. The in-room safes are easy to use and will keep your passport in a secure place at all times.

According to The Bahamas Firearms Act, individuals found to have a firearm or ammunition in their possession without a legally issued Bahamian gun license face a penalty of up to 10 years’ incarceration and $10,000 fine. Declaring the weapon in your luggage with an airline carrier does not grant permission to bring the weapon into The Bahamas. In order to sail, a guest must meet the requirements of ONE of the check boxes below. A flight back home is the fastest, cheapest, and most easily accessible option in such a circumstance. However, no matter how grave the incident demanding your attention is, you won’t be allowed to fly back into the United States without your passport on you.

U.S. citizens on closed-loop cruises (cruises that begin and end at the same port in the U.S.) can depart and re-enter the country with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate and government-issued photo ID. However, be aware that even on a closed-loop cruise, your daughter might need to present a passport at foreign ports your cruise ship visits. This depends on the specific requirements of the islands or countries you’ll be docking at.

Do You Need a Passport for Bahamas Cruise? Everything You Need to Know

It is important to note that some cruise lines may have additional requirements or restrictions for minors traveling without parents, so it is best to check with the cruise line before booking the trip. Some states in the United States offer enhanced driver’s licenses (EDLs), which are a form of ID that can be used for land and sea travel between the U.S. and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. If you live in a state that offers EDLs, this may be a convenient and cost-effective alternative to a passport. Permanent residents recognized by law will also be required to present their valid green cards and passports at ports of call they visit—even if these ports don’t require passports for United States citizens.

Be sure to check with your cruise line ahead of your trip to ensure you have the appropriate documents. For those who prefer to travel by sea, whether on a private yacht or a cruise ship, a U.S. passport card or a passport book can be used. The passport card is a more compact, wallet-sized version of the passport book that is valid for 5 years after issuance. It’s valid for entering the United States at land border crossings and sea ports of entry from The Bahamas.

What happens if you stay too long at the shops or Señor Frog’s and miss your ship? For example, you should renew your passport sometime before six months until expiration, if you plan to travel with it. This is important because many countries will not allow you to enter if your passport has less than six months until it expires. Most visitors to The Bahamas do not need special vaccinations before entering the country. However, travelers over the age of 1 year must provide a Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate, if arriving after leaving or transiting certain countries and must be vaccinated 10 days before entering The Bahamas. For an up-to-date list of countries, please visit The Bahamas government website.

When you’re on your cruise, there is no need to carry a passport on you since you’ll use your Sea Pass card for all transactions. Regardless, we always recommend traveling with a U.S. passport book, in case there are any inconveniences during your trip. If you are cruising to Mexico on a closed-loop cruise, (a journey that starts and ends at the same U.S. port), you can enter without a passport and show a state-issued ID and an original birth certificate instead. Whether you arrive by plane to board a ship or stay for a week at a resort or just spend a day in Nassau or Freeport, all require specific documentation.

A valid U.S. passport is a must-have for all travelers, regardless of age. This requirement ensures border agents to not only verify your identity and citizenship, but it also helps authorities maintain accurate records of arrivals and departures. If you’re not a U.S. citizen, do you need a passport to cruise to the Bahamas? Like with any international trip, however, you must understand the documentation requirements ahead of time; you don't want to be denied boarding! In short, the requirements for a passport when traveling to The Bahamas vary depending on whether you're traveling via cruise ship or plan on an extended land-based stay on one of the many islands. The Bahamian Government may also require proof of return airline ticket and sufficient funds to support your stay.

In conclusion, it is important to check the passport requirements for your specific situation before planning a Bahamas cruise. It is always recommended to have a valid passport in case of emergencies or unexpected events. If the Bahamas cruise departs from one U.S. port and returns to a different U.S. port, a passport is required. In this case, a passport card or an enhanced driver’s license may also be used.

During different seasons, cruises will often sail one-way routes from one port to another in order to reposition their ships. Elizabeth graduated from New York University's Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute with her M.A. Growing up, she had the privilege of traveling frequently with her family and fell in love with cruising after sailing on the Oasis of the Seas her freshman year of high school. She wanted to pursue a career that highlighted her passion for travel and strengths as a writer.

Overall, while a passport is the most widely accepted form of identification for international travel, there are alternative travel documents that may be accepted for a Bahamas cruise. It is important to check with your cruise line and do your research to ensure you have the appropriate documentation for your trip. Children under 19 can use these same documents only if they are traveling with a school, church group, or other organization with adult supervision. If you’re doing any international air travel to get to your cruise, then you are required to bring a valid U.S. passport book in order to board the plane. Department of State, U.S. citizens traveling to the Bahamas are generally required to present a passport that is valid at the time of entry through departure with at least two available blank pages for stamps.
